Balance transfer credit cards for a clear payoff plan.

Give yourself time to pay down card debt. Choose a fee and payoff period that fit your budget.

Balance transfer credit cards let you move existing card debt to a new card.

A 0% intro APR offer gives you a set period without interest on the transferred balance. Choose based on the transfer fee, the time available, and the monthly payment needed to finish. The interest you save should outweigh the fees.

Start with the monthly payment you can afford

Add the transfer fee to the balance you want to move. Divide that total by the months you have left at 0%.

(Balance + transfer fee) ÷ months left at 0% = monthly payoff target

This target may be higher than the card’s minimum payment. Aim to finish before the offer ends.

A longer offer can give you more room to repay

Say you want to transfer $4,000. Two cards offer 0% intro APR, with different fees and payoff periods.

12-month offer 18-month offer
Intro APR on transfers 0% 0%
Transfer fee 3%: $120 5%: $200
Total to repay $4,120 $4,200
Monthly payoff target $344 $234

Illustrative offers, not current cards. Assumes the transfer is completed at the start of the offer, the fee is added to the balance at 0%, and there are no new purchases or other fees. Monthly targets are rounded up; the final payment may be smaller.

The takeaway: The longer offer costs $80 more and lowers the monthly target by $110. Choose the 12-month offer if $344 fits your budget. The 18-month offer gives you six more months to finish if you need a lower payment.

If neither target fits, look for a longer offer or explore debt consolidation loans.

Check the terms before you apply

Check What to look for
Transfer fee and other costs Check the fee percentage, any minimum fee, and the annual fee. Weigh these costs against the interest you’d otherwise pay.
Time at 0% Check when the period starts and ends. Time may run from account opening, even if you transfer later.
Transfer deadline Check how soon you must move the balance to get the intro rate and advertised fee.
Transfer eligibility and limit Check which debts you can move. Transfers within the same issuer are often excluded. Your approved limit may not cover the full balance plus fee.
Rate after the offer Check the APR on any balance left when 0% ends. Interest then adds to what you owe.

Keep new purchases separate

A 0% rate on balance transfers may not apply to purchases. New spending can incur interest while you carry the transferred balance. Use the card for your payoff plan unless you’ve checked the purchase terms.

Keep paying until the transfer is complete

Continue payments on your current card until the transfer posts. Check for any remaining balance or interest, then set up on-time payments on the new card.
